For me, my love/hate issue with Madden has been that it has never produced a game up the the quality presentation of the 2K5 game. I have always complained bitterly that they bought the NFL and ESPN licences and never used them properly. If yo don’t believe me, then check my past Madden reviews. After almost 5 iterations on the 360, EA finally sees the light and has produced a good quality game.
Control – You play one Madden, you have played them all nothing new here.
Graphics – Stadiums are rendered nicely as always with great lighting…a little more attention has been paid to the helmet reflections, however most of the faces on the players look busted as always.
Sound – a big improvement on the overall crowd sound as now you can hear individual voices call out during the game….something 2K series has done for years. On the other hand the commentary from Hammond and Collinsworth still sounds (and uses lines) from last year with some of the phrases that repeats (especially the one about the WRs catching the balls in pitch black) but again, I will take this over ESPN radio any day!
Presentation- Kind of a mixed bag but I am liking it more than I hate it. While EA finally gave you a feel like you are watching the game with all of the nice cutaways to the crowd and facts…a few things still needed to be fixed in order for this to be the complete game that 2K5 is.
- Halftime show improvements – Ok ok…yeah we finally got one but how about doing a Chris Berman-esque voice over as the best plays are being replayed…worse yet how about all of the highlights are out of order?
- The pregame show – Thank you for putting it in!!! But guess what EA!! Another 2K5 steal that you dropped the ball on! When showing highlights from other games…SHOW.HIGHLIGHTS.FROM.OTHER.GAMES. if a 6 year old game can show you 1 or 2 plays from another game or even from my own, then you guys should be able to do it too! Also get rid of Alex…I am sure there are more people male or female that can act as if they are in the game better than her!
- I do like the fact that the AI is more active in signing players and making sensible signings, nothing like going thru a whole season and seeing the free agency just be static.
- Ahhh yeah!! before I forget, the tackling animations look a lot more realistic and so far I have seen 4 5 and 6 man tackles. Slightly glitchy in a few spots but otherwise it’s a step forward.
- Franchise mode has improved with team actually signing some players that were needed instead of going a whole season with many free agents just sitting static on the FA wire. Also you can’t really rob the AI out of trades and draft picks as in earlier versions
Some of the little things that I have seen that makes the game a little more worthwhile:
- the chain gang
- refs getting run over
- refs meeting and confirming the TD
- players being carted off after an injury
- so far 3 different crowd screens
- coaches arguing with refs about penalties
- players clowning around on the sidelines.
- better crowd reaction to plays
** Added **
Gameplay
- To ME…gameplay hasn’t changed all that much as far as AI and skill, you are either good at this game or you suck…just my opinion
- There are more varied player animations this time around and thankfully so far not a lot of repeat animations although as perviously mentioned you may get a really funky animation glitch but not so bad as to crash the game
- Accuracy of the stats… it depends on how YOU play the game and the time that you set it for.
- Is there a lot of gang tackling? NO…every tackle is NOT a gamg tackle but you do tend to see more defenders play towards whomever has the ball. It does look more realistic.
- Fight for the Fumble…i have only had it occur exactly 2 times…cheap…and arcadey and I believe actually, you can turn it off.
- In game ticker: Nothing makes you play a little harder than seeing how well other teams are doing throughout the course of your game…it’s till not here EA…fix this!!!
So, really this isn’t the year to be skeptical. It’s improved a lot over the last 2 iterations but still has a few more steps now to go before it completely makes me forget about 2K5.
And actually, when all is said and done, it’s really sad when you still can compare a new football game with a game that is 6 years old and last gen.
On a larger scale of 1 to 10 I would give this an 8.
5.0 out of 5 stars Just Buy It! Don’t Read The Review, Just Buy It! Trust Me!
This Madden game is the best game in the franchise. I don’t understand why people complain about little things here and there.
It’s hard to understand what happens on the Madden development team, because every year it seems like they change the game in new and completely unnecessary ways. This year, the menus have been changed for seemingly no reason. The new menus do not look as good as the menus in Madden 09 and are harder to use. Why change them? You’ll ask yourself questions like that a lot with this version of the game if you played a lot of Madden 09.
If the last few entries in the Madden series did not exist, then this version would probably impress me much more. As other reviewers have noted, it seems that almost nothing has changed in core gameplay except for a few mini-game button mashing sequences. The reason I am only giving this game 3 stars, though, is that other parts of the game that contributed to my enjoyment in past versions have been changed or stripped out without reason. The playcalling menus are now harder to use, particularly in terms of substitution packages. You no longer have the ability to train players, making the preseason almost completely pointless and taking a way a fun weekly activity in the game to keep the franchise mode moving forward. Little changes like this may mean nothing to some gamers, but for me make this game less fun and compelling than last year’s version. On top of that the presentation has not improved – the game feels rough around the edges, there are bugs, the play-by-play remains terrible, etc. I wish I could return it.
I should note that I do not play online, so this review is not intended as a reflection of that mode. As a single-player experience, Madden 10 is one step forward and three steps back for those who play every year. If you don’t have anything to judge it against, it’s probably a pretty satisfying football experience. If you own Madden 09 and play primarily single-player, this is a roster update at best. Very frustrating given the strong work that some of the other EA Sports development teams have done with their franchises.
I was very excited for months leading up to release date. Through the EA Sports website and blog they were detailing all of the new features that Madden 10 would have. One major problem – they never detailed the features that were being removed. Yes the defensive line control is greatly improved, being able to put defensive ends or strong safeties at linebacker is cool, on-line franchise is a big hit and online co-op is the logical next step – and if these things were simply added to Madden 09 I would give this game 5 stars.
But things were not added. Oh no, they rebuilt the game from the ground up. Which means all that cool stuff they have added over the years – gone.
Gone – the strip ball button. That’s right, they removed an entire button. It wasn’t that effective, but if you couldn’t stop someone you would gladly trade 2 facemask penalties and 3 missed tackles for that one key fumble.
Gone – Hit stick. It’s still in the manual – but after more than a dozen games I haven’t seen it. I used to be a hit stick machine too, I could always count on at least one forced fumble from a monster hit. Plus it was fun. Well no more.
Gone – Run/Pass commit. Telling your blitzing middle linebacker to ignore the playfake and go after the quarterback was more important than actually having a middle linebacker on the field. Hitting up or down on the right analog stick on defense was as automatic for me as pressing A to hike the ball on offense. No more.
Gone – Multiple posessions in online games. The accelerated clock is not a good idea. Either you have 15 minute quarters with an accelerated clock or you have 5 minute quarters. But when it takes 35 seconds to run a play, and there are 600 seconds in a half, you only get to run 17 plays – about the number of plays an extended rushing dominated drive will take. Really sweet to have each team have one possession per game – might as well have just stuck with the 1 minute quarter demo for online games.
Gone – no huddle offense. If you plan on getting around the accelerated clock by running a no huddle, forget it. Running Michael Turner (who led the league in carries last year and should therefore have the most stamina) up the middle three straight times means you won’t see him for the rest of the half.
Gone – Substitutions and stamina that made sense. See above. Nothing like trying to throw the ball with your #8 receiver on the field, especially when you only get to depth chart your top 6 receivers.
Gone – audibles and hot routes. 3rd and inches. You come out in the power I. The defense comes out in goalline. You audible to shotgun. You hotroute the split end to a streak and the slot reciever to a 10 yard out route. You get – a 5 yard delay of game penalty. The accelerated clock is terrible, it runs the playclock down to 15 seconds, and it takes 8 seconds to get to the line and another 8 to audible a receiver from one side of the field to another.
Gone – Player weapons. The big things of ’09, which was very popular, is already removed.
Gone – Smart weapons.
Gone – Player roles. The big thing of ’08, which was very popular, is already removed.
Gone – Vision cone. Despite its unpopularity, the option to use it was helpful if you had Brady or Manning.
Gone – Highlighting your primary reciever on offense.
Gone – Owner mode. This was gone last year to, and it still doesn’t make sense.
Gone – Player bios. They are still there, but they no longer include some of the information they used to.
Gone – Coach progression. Another thing removed last year that I wanted to see back.
Gone – The old menus. The new ones are not better, just different. Different does not mean better, it just means you’ve confused all of us so EA can have a new shiny look.
Gone – Rings and trophys. I thought they were a waste last year, but now that they are gone I realized how much I liked Madden telling me how good I was.
Gone – Online stats. Now you have statistics that track ALL of your games. I don’t care how I did against the computer, I only care about how I did against real people.
Gone – Training camp.
Gone – In season mini games.
Gone – Improving you players how you want them to be improved, and completing tasks to accomplish it.
Gone – Quick passes. In ’09, if your slot reciever was not covered, you could quick pass it to him and get 5 yards. In 10, if your slot reciever is not covered, you can quick pass it to the safety standing 10 yards away from your intended reciever.
Gone – Hitting a button to get through cut scenes. The referees measuring for a first down is neat, but I got tired of it after game 2. Last year I played 600 games, how angry am I going to be the ten thousandth time I see the referees huddle in the endzone?
Gone – lead blocking.
Gone – logical fumble recovery. “Fight for the fumble” is a failure.
Gone – Substitutions on special teams. Last year you could decide whether you wanted your best players on special teams or if you wanted to play it safe to avoid key injuries. This year you get your third string HB and 6th string WR covering kicks, whether you want it or not.
Gone – Special team blocking. See above. Forget about having offensive linemen and fullbacks out there for you, your stuck with 5th receivers.
Gone – The playcalling system. Replaced with a worse version of the 2001 system. You now see three plays, in the 01 version, you also had a preview of the 3 plays above and the 3 plays below what you were looking at. A downgrade from 09, and even a downgrade from 01.
Gone – John Madden. Chris Collinsworth is an embarrasment to the entire human race.
Look, your going to buy the game anyway, just like I did. Just know that a lot of the stuff that you used to enjoy is gone. This is not an NFL 2K5 love post either. 2K Sports can’t even produce a baseball game where the first baseman stands on the bag to recieve an infield throw, so how good can they be?
